After Effects templates without the stock-look trap
How to judge a VideoHive template in two minutes: edit points, font lock-in, and whether it will survive a real brief.
A VideoHive preview is a finished commercial. Your job is to see the skeleton. Watch once for mood, then scrub for edit points: can you swap footage, type, and color without rebuilding the comp?
Open the item page and read the required plugins line. A template that needs Optical Flares plus a paid pack you do not own is not “$29.” Add the plugin cost. If the description says “no plugins required,” believe it only after you open the project on a clean After Effects install.
Font lock-in is the silent delay. If the look depends on a $200 typeface not bundled, budget time to pair a license or swap. Templates that use Google fonts or pack the faces (check the license) ship faster.
Avoid the ones that only look good with the author’s footage. Drop one of your clips into the first comp in the preview video’s first five seconds. If it collapses, the motion design is dressing, not a system.
Browse After Effects templates through the hop when you are ready to buy. Affiliate disclosure: Envato may pay a commission on that purchase.
